LED Lighting

In LED lighting, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) are used instead of a filament or gas like in incandescent or halogen bulbs. In this fast-growing market, it won't be long until LED lighting completely replaces traditional alternatives. LEDs are solid state devices with no moving parts, chemicals, or gases involved, meaning they are very safe, reliable and efficient. They use a fraction of the energy required to run any other type of lighting, and last many times longer.

Benefits of LED Lighting

  • LEDs operate at a much higher efficiency than traditional lighting, running on about 8-15% of the power used by an incandescent bulb. This means that LED lighting will save you more money over time than any other type of lighting.

  • Incandescent and halogen bulbs run hot, whereas LEDs run cool. There is no risk of overheating.

  • LED bulbs turn on instantly, unlike energy saver bulbs which take a while to reach their full brightness.

  • LEDs are ideal for use in applications that are subject to frequent on-off cycling, unlike fluorescent lamps that burn out quickly when cycled frequently.

  • The manufacturer has good control over the colour of light output.

  • LEDs do not contain mercury like fluorescent lamps.

  • The lifespan of a good quality LED bulb far exceeds that of any other type of bulb. The items in our range are rated up to 50,000 hours, meaning our products can last for 25 years or more. Although they require an initial investment, they will pay for themselves many times over in their long lifetime.

Colour Temperature Selection

The light colour temperature of LEDs is measured in kelvins (K) and is something to consider when purchasing any LED product. The most common options are Warm White, Neutral White and Cool White.

The application must be considered when choosing whether to go for a Warm or Cool toned light. Cool White is ideal for task and commercial lighting, whereas Warm White is better suited for general household lighting. Cool White is bright and bold; perfect for a modern setting. Warm White is soft and warm; ideal for creating a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere.

Another thing to consider is the other lighting that exists in the area. For example, if you have multiple light sources in one room, and only one of which is being updated to LED lighting, you may want to select a light colour that is similar to your existing lights. This is a personal preference: some people like to mix and match, while other people prefer consistency in light colour.

Colour Rendering Index

Colour Rendering Index or CRI refers to how accurately artificial light shows colours of the objects or people under them. It is measured on a scale of 1-100, with 1 being the worst and 100 the best. A CRI of >90 is excellent, 80 is good, and 50-70 is fair. A CRI of less than 50 will have an unpleasant feel and the colours will look unnatural.
